Life Unusual : 23 Apr 2020
I had an interesting discussion with my 13 year old son over breakfast this morning. He was sharing with me about one of the online games he's been playing. He shared about a "creative" feature in the game that allows players to get unlimited anything, like bullets, guns, resources etc... except for unlimited life.
For the sake of discussion, with unlimited game life like being an immortal, one could go on playing perpetually. I thought to myself, will the game still be exciting being an immortal character? How does one achieve anything in such a mode of playing? Where is the fun in that?
Then I reflected on real life, existential philosophy, and this profound quote "Although the physicality of death destroys man, the idea of death saves him" by Dr. Irvin Yalom. Martin Heidegger (1926) shared this important insight about two fundamental modes of existing in the world: (1) a state of forgetfulness of being, or (2) a state of mindfulness of being. The latter is the higher state of living, being aware of the fragility of life, and thus taking responsibility for one's being. It's about living the authentic life, making choices, engagement and a meaningful life.
